Ocean and Body Friendly Ways to Protect Yourself From the Hot Summer Sun
On May 1 of this year, Hawaii passed a bill banning the sales of sunscreens with chemical agents that are thought to be directly linked to the mass destruction of coral reefs. This follows a study from 2015 in which international scientists concluded that chemicals found in sunscreens such as oxybenzone are extremely toxic to coral and other marine life. Shockingly, according to National Geographic, around 14,000 tons of sunscreen end up in our oceans every year.
However, although some sunscreens have been deemed toxic to the ocean, it’s important not to skip out on protecting your skin from harmful UV rays. An ever-more popular shift in consumers’ demand for natural, chemical-free, and non-toxic products has resulted in the availability of a lot more new mineral sunscreens that are ocean friendly, and body friendly too.
Here at our private beach resort, we highly value the health of both our guests and the ocean, so we’ve put together a short list of a few ocean friendly ways you can protect yourself from the sun this summer:
- Do a little research and read some reviews on a good, non-toxic mineral sunscreen so that you can make the switch to an ocean-friendly sun block. Look for the Protect Land + Sea Certification to be sure it is in fact an environmentally friendly certified product.
- Invest in some sun protective clothing! This is a great opportunity to hit the shops and get some nice cover-ups for the beach or some fancy sun-protective shirts. This also includes high quality sunglasses that will protect your eyes too.
- Eating natural foods that contain carotenoids or anti-carcinogenic properties that will help protect you from UV rays and skin cancers. Carrots, yams, kale, spinach, and egg yolk are a few examples of easily found foods that provide some protection from the inside against the sun.
